About Build Team One

Build Team One has been serving Southeast Michigan homeowners since 2004 — though back then, we went by a different name.

Dave Hopkins founded Black River Construction after years of learning the trades from the ground up, starting as a painter working alongside family. Over time, he developed a working knowledge of nearly every trade in the industry and built Black River into a full-service general contracting operation. In 2018, the company became Build Team One — a name chosen to better reflect what we actually do, and one with a subtle nod to the military ethos of precision, teamwork, and getting the job done right.

The "team" part isn't just marketing. Chad, our lead carpenter and foreman, is a Holly native with over 35 years of union carpentry experience. Dave and Chad met on a commercial job site and have now worked side by side for more than a decade. That kind of tenure means we don't just show up and swing hammers — we plan, coordinate, and execute projects of any scale with the same attention to detail. When the scope calls for it, we bring in trusted subcontractors for specialized work, giving us the capacity to take on larger additions, full kitchen overhauls, and complex multi-trade projects without sacrificing quality or oversight.

Off the job site, Chad channels that same craftsmanship into his other passion — cars. Whether he's building one up in the garage, showing it, or running it at the track, the precision he brings to carpentry follows him everywhere.

We also believe in keeping it in the family. Whenever possible, we bring in people we trust personally — because a family-based business holds itself to a different standard.

We're licensed, insured, and proud to serve Oakland, Livingston, and Genesee Counties. Whether you're dreaming of a new kitchen, planning an addition, or finally finishing that basement, we'd love to be your team.
